About Jonathan.
Hi, I'm Jonathan. For as long as I can remember, I've been learning to listen to the body. Let me tell you how that started.
A body in motion.
I grew up next to a lake, and my best friend was my neighbor, a man in his late seventies. We swam it in summer, skated it in winter, played tennis, skied together. He later won gold in tennis and skiing at the Senior Olympics. Being in my body was never something I thought about. It was just how I lived.
At six I was also a professional magician. My mother was in politics, and she'd bring me to conferences, where I'd perform for whole rooms of adults.
Around thirteen, that shifted. Magic led me to juggling, and magic never took much, you buy the trick and you do it. Juggling was the opposite: years of work to master a single thing. That's what pulled me in. Around the same time I found Ashtanga yoga, and practiced it seriously for years, later teaching it myself.
The work found me in my twenties. Another performer, a sword swallower of all things, told me it helped him swallow the swords. I brushed it off. Then my own body forced the question.
Three years of sciatica.
For three years I had severe sciatica. I tried everything I could find. Nothing helped. A friend pointed me toward something I had never heard of.
He told me what he'd done was temporary relief. The body is complex. Lasting change would take the entire ten sessions.
That search led me home to Boulder, to Emmett Hutchins, one of the first teachers Dr. Rolf chose. That was the turn. I understood I wasn't here to entertain the many anymore. I was here to be of service, one person at a time, with something precise, something with a long history of actually helping. That moment decided everything.
The practice.
In the beginning I was a technician. I knew the recipe, I followed the steps, I hoped for results. When they were thin, the only answer I had was more sessions. It took me years to move past that.
Over time something shifted. The recipe became automatic and I was free to actually listen, to go somewhere with each person instead of just moving through them. I started saying things in one session I'd never say in another. I dropped my expectations. I kept the space light.
It's rarely where it hurts.
The body is not waiting to be fixed. It is waiting to be heard.
Someone comes in with a bad back or a locked-up shoulder, and the first place I look is the ankles. Old sprains, the knees, whether they ever came down hard on the tailbone. That sets a pattern in the sacrum, and it travels.
Then the head. An old concussion, or braces as a kid. Both build tension that runs down into the neck and shoulders.
Words you can watch.
I'm making short films, just me talking through what I see on the table. They're not up yet. The channel is.
On the line.
Dr. Rolf was teaching when a man walked in who could barely walk. His scoliosis was severe. Everyone in the room waited to see how she would address it.
He was in pain. His spine was crooked. And she was calling him the most aligned person in the room.
She wasn't looking at his posture. She was seeing a man who knew exactly who he was and why he was here. That was the line. I think about that story in every session, because that is what this work is really pointed at: not fixing the body, but waking up the person inside it.
Why Chirripó.
The water here comes straight out of the mountain. No treatment, no filtration beyond rock and earth. Just spring water the way water is supposed to be. Across the street a river runs all year that you can drink from.
- Green air, fireflies, birds at dawn. Seventy-five degrees most days, beach an hour away
- Farmers and families, simple and kind; stars you can actually see
- Space enough to do the whole series without rushing home
This is where the nervous system remembers how to unplug. That is why I am here, and a large part of why this work lands.
